Cowboys Pre-season Tracker

As we get closer and closer to Seattle, the news of distant Training camp practices and the upcoming feeling of real-live football starts to spring up once again. Here are some key players to have your eye on during the pre-season for the Dallas Cowboys.

1. Joe Milton III vs. Sam Howell (QB)  

The battle for the backup QB position behind Dak Prescott is the headline offensive storyline this preseason. Both Milton and Howell will split the bulk of the snaps under center to prove who deserves to hold the clipboard as QB2.

2. Caleb Downs (DB)

The 11th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft is poised to be a foundational piece in defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s new scheme. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed Downs will see early preseason snaps to adjust to NFL game speed.  

3. Jaydon Blue vs. Phil Mafah (RB)

With Javonte Williams locked in as the starter, the backup running back role is wide open. Rookie Jaydon Blue brings explosive speed as a change-of-pace option, while Phil Mafah provides a physical, downhill running style. Their performance in live exhibition games will decide the depth chart order.

4. Malachi Lawrence (EDGE)

Dallas' other 2026 first-round pick is slated to get significant pass-rushing reps throughout August. Lawrence’s ability to win one-on-one matchups off the edge will reveal how quickly he can contribute in the defensive rotation.
