The Cowboys fall to their rivals in a close matchup 24-20. Let's review things that led to their loss and how the game went overall.
Offensive Performance
1. Fast Start
The Cowboys’ offense came out swinging, resembling the hot start of the 2023 Texas Rangers.
Their early rhythm was aided by Jalen Carter’s ejection for spitting on Dak Prescott, but the unit still showed balance and execution.
2. Run Game Revival
Javonte Williams: 2 rushing TDs, averaged 4.9 yards per carry, setting a physical tone.
Miles Sanders: 4 carries for 53 yards, but his costly fumble before the rain delay overshadowed an otherwise efficient outing.
3. Passing Attack
The passing game ran primarily through CeeDee Lamb, though his multiple drops were pivotal:
First-half slant drop stalled a drive, leading to a FG.
3rd-and-10 in Q4: dropped pass bounced off his helmet, nearly intercepted.
Final drive “two-piece”: two drops (one clean in the chest, one slightly overthrown) that sealed the game.
George Pickens & Jake Ferguson were quiet. Ferguson also dropped two crucial end-zone opportunities (one underthrown, one well-placed but unfinished despite drawing a penalty).
4. Dak Prescott’s Performance
Final line: 21/34, 188 yards, 4 BTTs (Big-Time Throws).
Looked quicker, more decisive, and improved at reading the field compared to 2024.
Stats don’t reflect how much yardage was lost due to WR miscues.
Questionable throws: late seam to Spann-Ford in Q3 that got his TE rocked.
5. Offensive Line
Held up much better than last season—few pressures, no collapse issues.
6. Overall Impression
The offense was balanced, efficient, and promising, but self-inflicted wounds (drops, turnovers, miscues) cost them a chance at a statement win.
Prescott looks sharp heading into Week 2 vs. the Giants.
Defensive Performance
1. First-Half Struggles
Couldn’t stop Jalen Hurts’ scrambling—three rushing TDs allowed in the half (two by Hurts).
Despite limiting Saquon Barkley and bottling up A.J. Brown & DeVonta Smith (combined 4 catches, 24 yards), discipline and lane integrity broke down.
2. Pass Coverage
Trevon Diggs (on a snap count) contained Brown well.
DaRon Bland impressed with steady coverage.
Kaiir Elam made plays but was burned badly on a 51-yard Hurts-to-Dotson bomb, a turning point.
3. Bright Spots
Kenny Clark delivered a strong game in the trenches, giving Dallas some much-needed interior disruption.
4. Second-Half Adjustments
Defense rebounded after halftime:
Shut out the Eagles in the second half.
Allowed just 6 rushing yards on 13 carries in the 4th quarter.
Forced multiple punts despite weather delays.
Generated consistent pressure (30%+ rate), though sacks were scarce.
5. Overall Impression
Tale of two halves: first-half miscues and poor lane control dug a hole, but second-half dominance gave Dallas a chance to steal it late.
If the second-half defense becomes the norm, Dallas could develop into a top-tier unit under Matt Eberflus.
