The Kansas City Chiefs just freed up nearly 45 million dollars in cap space by restructuring Patrick Mahomes. Not only did they do that, but they just laid out a fundamental blueprint for Jerry Jones and company can use to solve one of their biggest issues that has been plaguing them for a minute. A way to convert Dak Prescott's contract into money that won't harm them in the cap space.

This isn't the first time the Chiefs have done this with Mahomes. When he was on his old deal that he recieved in 2020, they restructured it in 2021 to free up 12 million in cap space. Again in 2024, the restructured again to free up 21.6 million dollars in cap space. They did so by converting most of his contract into a signing bonus, reducing the amount that would be harmed by the cap amount, thus freeing up money so that KC could spend outside of the team.

Let me iterate one thing, Mahomes didn't take a paycut, he didn't take a contract that was less for what he deserved or what he asked, he just converted his money into a way that could benefit the Kansas City Chiefs, what's great is that they practically laid the blueprint for the Cowboys to do that with Dak. At the moment the Cowboys are 30 million over cap space because they frankly suck at managing contracts. With the blueprint that the Chiefs laid out, they could very well do it.
